The World’s Largest Air Purifier Arrives to Clean up the Smog in China

In an attempt to clean up the smog in China, as well as highlight the dangers of air pollution, the Smog Free Tower has arrived in Beijing.

Supported by the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection and designed by Studio Roosegaarde, the tower opened in China at the weekend in Beijing 751 D.Park, marking the start of its grand China tour.

The Smog Free Project consists of the Smog Free Tower and Smog Free Jewellery. Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and his team of designers and experts have been developing the project at Studio Roosegaarde since 2013 and after its successful pilot in Rotterdam, the project is now starting a tour across the globe.

The seven-metre-high Smog Free Tower is the largest air purifier in the world. It creates a bubble of clean air giving citizens “clean air for free”. The Smog Free Tower cleans 30.000m3 per hour via patented ozone-free ion technology and uses a small amount of green electricity.

The Smog Free Tower captures and collects more than 75 per cent of the PM2.5 and PM10 airborne smog particles and releases clean air around the tower with a 360-degree coverage creating an almost circular zone of clean air in its surrounding.

The Smog Free Ring and Smog Free Cufflinks are made from compressed smog particles collected from the Smog Free Tower. By sharing a Smog Free Ring, people donate 1000m3 of clean air.

The Smog Free Project was inspired by Roosegaarde’s travels in China and particularly by a visit to Beijing in 2013 when he could not look up out of his hotel room and children were kept indoors due to the severity of the smog. More than 80 per cent of people in urban areas are exposed to air quality levels that exceed World Health Organization limits.

It is part of Roosegaarde’s larger Landscapes of the Future.

“Smog Free Project is about the dream of clean air and the beginning of a journey towards smarter cities,” said Roosegaarde. “I am delighted to bring the Smog Free Project to the heart of the bustling creative community in Beijing and look forward to developing more joint ideas and solutions.”

Roosegaarde recently won the Airbnb Design Innovation Medal at London’s Design Festival.

The Design Innovation Medal, supported by British Land and Airbnb, celebrates the achievements of designers who are “making a significant difference to our lives through their innovation, originality and imagination.”

China Installed 20 GW of Solar Power in First-Half; Triple From a Year Ago

China installed 20 gigawatts (GW) of solar power capacity in the first half of 2016, three times as much as during the same period a year ago, state news agency Xinhua reported late on Thursday citing the country’s largest solar industry lobby.

The surge in capacity extended China’s lead over Germany as the top solar generator, said Wang Bohua, General Secretary of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA), according to Xinhua.

Power developers were also pushed to complete installations ahead of a proposed reduction in the price paid for solar power by grid operators, said Wang.

China’ government decreed in late 2015 that only projects that were operational by June 30, 2016, would be eligible for a ‘feed-in tariff’ of roughly 1.0 yuan (15 U.S. cents) per kilowatt hour (kwh), while projects completed after that date would be eligible for a lower tariff rate.

Production of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules also increased to 27 GW, up by 37.8 percent in the first half of the year, the CPIA said in a report on its website, adding that the profit margins of the major manufacturers improved to an average of 5 percent from 4.85 percent last year.

China surpassed Germany as the largest solar power generator worldwide last year, with installed PV capacity totaling 43 GW as of the end of 2015.

The government has set a national target for new commercial solar power capacity of 18.1 GW for this year, which is below initial market expectations and is a sign that the government is trying to slow capacity expansion in the power generation sector.

Including experimental roof-top projects and charitable installations in impoverished areas, total new solar capacity is expected to be 30 GW by year-end, CPIA said.

The CPIA data showed that the western provinces have the greatest surplus capacity, with the provinces of Xinjiang and Gansu wasting 52 percent and 39 percent of their respective generated solar power in the first quarter.

China’s solar power output increased 31.3 percent from a year ago in June to 3,300 gigawatt hours, according to the National Statistics Bureau. That equated to 0.7 percent of total power generation, and was the first time the statistics bureau carried solar output data.

China & Georgia Sign Framework Deal on Currency Swap – Investment Advice from CWIIL Group of Companies

China’s central bank announced on Sunday that it had signed a framework agreement on a currency swap program with Georgian central bank.

Zhou Xiaochuan, head of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), inked the document with Giorgi Kadagidze, governor of the National Bank of Georgia, on the sidelines of the 34th Meeting of the Central Bank Governors’ Club of the Central Asia, Black Sea Region and Balkan Countries.

Both sides expressed willingness to establish the currency swap program, which will strengthen bilateral currency cooperation, promote settlement directly in the two currencies, and facilitate trade and investment, according to a PBOC statement.

During the two-day meeting that concluded Sunday in Georgia, the central bank governors discussed global and regional economic situations, and the influence of “dollarization” on emerging markets, said the statement.

Industrial Restructuring Cuts Power Use, Freight Volume – Investment Advice by CWIIL Group

China’s industrial restructuring has helped cut electricity consumption and freight transportation, while the economy has maintained a medium-to-high growth rate in the first six months, said Zhang Xiaoqiang, executive deputy director of China Center for International Economic Exchanges.

Zhang admitted that there were some doubts about China’s economic growth rate in the first half (H1), as two key indicators of economic growth, namely power consumption and freight volume, dropped remarkably.

China’s GDP expanded 7 percent in the first six months this year from the same period last year, slightly down from 7.4 percent in 2014.

Power consumption, however, only expanded 1.3 percent in the first six months, sharply lower than 5.3 percent posted last year. Freight volume expanded 4.2 percent, down from 7.5 percent last year.

The industrial sector grew at a slower pace in H1, while the service sector has become a major engine for the economic growth, said Zhang, adding that the industrial sector consumes more energy per unit of GDP than the service sector.

In freight transportation, China’s coal, steel and cement industries have been subject to restructuring and, thus, their output has dropped, leading to slowdown in growth, he said.

The discrepancy between economic growth and the two key indicators’s growth in the first six months did not fit with previous patterns, but industrial restructuring is a new factor, and should be taken into account when analyzing the new situation, he said.

Beijing Issues Bond to Finance New Airport – Investment Advice by CWIIL Group of Companies

Lawmakers in Chinese capital Beijing approved Friday government plan to issue additional bonds worth 6.7 billion yuan ($1 billion) to finance the building of the new airport.

Around 4 billion yuan of the bonds will be used to support land expropriation and housing demolition in the project, Li Yingjin, head of the municipal finance bureau, said in a report to the municipal people’s congress on adjustment to the 2015 budget.

Li attributed the increased funding to reasons like larger demolition areas. According to an early report, 23.8 billion yuan will cover land compensation fees for the new airport.

The construction of the new airport in southern Beijing’s Daxing District started in December 2014 and take about five years to complete.

The airport, which is designed to handle 72 million passengers, 2 million tons of cargo and mail, and 620,000 flights by 2025, will meet Beijing’s rising demand for air transportation and help achieve balanced development in the capital’s southern and northern areas.

Supply Chain Helps Firms Survive – Investment Advice by CWIIL Group of Companies

Companies need to enhance their capabilities in sourcing and procurement to better handle challenges amid global economic uncertainties, participants said at the 2015 International Sourcing Forum.

“Sourcing and procurement have become increasingly important for companies to survive in today’s challenging economic environment,” said Christoph Feldmann, CEO of the Association of Materials Management, Purchasing and Logistics — an industry body in Germany with 9,200 members.

The challenges include demanding customer requirements, fast pace of technological innovations, as well as keen global competition.

“The most successful companies will be the ones who can best handle these challenges (and) a lot is related to their capabilities in sourcing and procurement,” Feldmann said.

The forum’s theme, “Made in China — the New Structure of International Sourcing,” is the prelude to the three-day International Sourcing Fair, which opens today at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center.

The fair invites buyers to set up booths and list out what they expect to buy, reversing the traditional model of suppliers showing their products.

Last year’s fair sealed deals worth about US$240 billion.
